Just Three More Weeks To Fantasy Fest!

Every year during the month of October, here in Key West, Florida, there is a week long adult themed celebration called Fantasy Fest.

If you’ve never heard about Fantasy Fest before, it would be surprising. One would think that everyone has heard of this unique and fascinating series of events. This year, 2018, the event will take place from October 19th through the 28th, and there will be more festivities than ever before! I suppose that’s even longer than one week.

The event has its own website; https://fantasyfest.com/ where you can find a lot more info. Here is the 2018 Official Fantasy Fest Ladies Racerback Tank Top that is available for purchase:

You may have heard of this festival, but you’ve never experienced it, and you will want to this year, or in the very next few years. Who can blame you? It’s fun, it’s wild, it’s exciting!

Here is a brief history of the event: If you have ever spent any time at all on Key West’s famous and iconic Duval Street, then you know there is almost always a party going on, but that wasn’t always the case. Back in the 1970’s, despite reliably beautiful Caribbean weather, from a retail and tourism standpoint October was a dead month for tourism. Stores, shops, art galleries, and restaurants up and down Duval Street, would put out the “gone fishing” signs and closed up for months at a time.

A group of local business owners started thinking about what they could do to change that situation by somehow attracting visitors to the island and tempting snowbirds to return sooner for an earlier start of the lucrative winter season.

Bill Conkle, Tony Falcone, Joe Liszka and Frank Romano decided that a really big party might do just the trick — and taking advantage of the local popularity of Halloween and the tradition of fanciful costuming, back in 1979, they threw a parade.

Now, although that first parade, was relatively small, it was absolutely outrageous, and in time it has grown to become Fantasy Fest®, an annual festival of costumed parties in the true Key West style.

Over the years, Fantasy Fest, has become the premier masking and costuming extravaganza, like nothing else you have ever seen, anywhere! The festival has grown to encompass more than 60 parties, costumed marches, street fairs, and glamorous balls, as well as the show-stopping Fantasy Fest parade.

Since its inception, Fantasy Fest has continually boosted the Key West economy by filling up hotel rooms and showcasing local businesses, restaurants, and bars during the two weekends closest to Halloween.

Bringing in as many as 75,000 revelers each year, it’s an event that invites grown-ups out to play and celebrates our Florida Keys culture. Fantasy Fest is committed to extending the time that visitors stay by encouraging the creation of diverse events throughout the 10-day festival. The opportunity to show off the imaginative and resourceful spirit that defines The Florida Keys & Key West excites local participants and visitors.

Many Fantasy Fest events and activities serve as important fundraisers for local non-profit organizations, including the iconic King & Queen of Fantasy Fest campaign, which raises money for AIDS Help of Monroe County.

Now in 2018, you can expect new innovations designed to keep the festival fresh, relevant, fun, and exciting, along with a renewed emphasis on encouraging local business engagement and participation, an increased focus on Key West Arts and Culture, and a commitment to recycling and keeping the festival green.

Purchase your must-have festival T-shirts, hats and koozies, and meet the local festival concierges, who can help you plan your schedule for the week or just find the best late night eats or live music.

Enjoy your time with us here in Key West, and we hope you plan to come back and visit again next year for another spectacular festival, or in the very near future! Mile 0.jpg

US Highway #1 is a highway in North America which starts from Key West and ends in northern Maine at the border of Canada.

It’s the longest north to south road in the U.S.A. There’s an end and a beginning sign. Before people leave Key West, they usually want to see Mile Marker 0. Yes, it’s very cool that it’s the beginning of a very long route, but it really is just a street sign; there is nothing brilliant or magical about it…or is there?

It Is Better To Own Rather Than Rent In Key West, Florida!

For anyone who was wondering; It Is Better To Own Rather Than Rent In Key West, Florida!

Although the prices of houses in Key West are seemingly high, the prices of houses are much higher in places such as… New York City, San Francisco, Honolulu, Boston, Chicago and Washington D.C.

We all know that it’s better to own rather than rent, because a mortgage payment is usually considerably less than a rent payment would be on the same dwelling. These days, there are many places you can live around the United States, and when you want to rent an apartment, a condo, or even a house in those places, the owner asks for the first month’s rent in advance, naturally, and only a small security deposit, which might only be a few hundred bucks.

In most places around the U.S.A., gone are the days when you had to pay the first month, the last month, and a security deposit equal to a full month’s rent. However, in some spots, this type of requirement still exists, and Key West is one of them.

Aside from that, the rental rates in Key West are extremely high. For example, a decent one bedroom and one bathroom apartment rents for somewhere between $2,500 to $3,500 a month! Part of the reason might be because Key West is an island paradise, and it is highly desirable as a resort destination.

Now, when you take into account the fact that you have to pay up front, the equivalent of THREE months rental rate, an apartment with the above mentioned rates would require between $7,500 to $10,500 up front, just to move in! There are some decent two bedroom and two bathroom apartments or condos that rent for $5,000 a month, so the upfront money would be $15,000.

When you consider all of these figures, you might be much better off to use your thousands of dollars as a down payment on the purchase of a home, condo, or townhouse. Then your mortgage payment may be a lot less than you would pay for a rent in a similar dwelling.

So, if you are planning a move to Key West, then keep in mind that It Is Better To Own Rather Than Rent In Key West, Florida!
